Outer Islands
Here we have provided a snapshot of what there is to offer on Kiribati's outer islands. The most wonderful thing about surfing in Kiribati is that if time is spent exploring, the pay off will be incredible.
Marakei
Rawanawii

- Stokeability – Fast and Hollow Right Hander – 50m rides – Highly Recommended
Switchback
- Wind Direction – SE NE
- Swell Direction – NNW - NNE
- Tide – Low – Mid Tide
- Accessibility – First bridge to the south of island council. Access via road – 5min paddle
- Hazards – The elusive dune – Poo Particles
- Stokeability – Novelty Stoke – Rights into Lefts - Enjoy
Abaiang
Manra Channel
- Wind Direction – E - NE
- Swell Direction – S - NW
- Tide – Mid to High
- Accessibility – Remote – 2-3hrs from Betio Wharf, Tarawa. Old resort on the islet.
- Hazards – Sunburn – Staghorn Corals – Remoteness – Heavy Rip
- Stokeability – Punchy wave – For experienced surfer only when 6ft+.
With regards to accessing the following two outer islands, planes will need to be used. There is always the chance of just rocking up at the airport with your board and giving it a crack. It has been known to work.
Butaritari
Bone Crushers
- Wind Direction – NW - NE
- Swell Direction – ESE - S
- Tide – No idea – Maybe mid-tide
- Accessibility – Plane Ride – Or a massive boat – Once on the island accessible by motorbike or council truck
- Hazards – Remoteness – Sharks – Barracuda - Spooky

Temotu
- (South East corner)
- Wind Direction – NW – SW – No wind would be best
- Swell Direction – NE - SE
- Tide – Mid to High
- Accessibility – Remote – Take a compass – 200m paddle. Rights into Lefts.
- Hazards – Tiger Sharks – Reef - Fuel
- Stokeability – Remoteness is your best friend.
